Helping Braskem Save Water at Camaçari Plant in Brazil

Background

Nalco Champion, in partnership with Braskem, has developed a work aimed at increasing the concentration cycle of boilers in the Utilities area, and at reducing water losses in the high pressure steam generation process.
Prior to this project, the Boilers had a high loss percentage, above the established goal of 2%, i.e., large purge opening and low concentration cycle. Upon the alignment of Braskem's processes & production area and joint management with Nalco Champion, the results evidence that the control of these parameters has become more robust, preventing loss of energy by elimination of hot water from boilers, improving the management of a resource that becomes scarcer every day: the Water.

Technology

Through a patented fluorescence technology for internal treatment and boiler feed water, we are able to measure its concentration and obtain the benefit of diagnosing losses of these boilers.

Innovation

Nalco Champion has conducted a work in partnership with Braskem to analyze points out of specification, which were hindering the improvement of results; then, the company implemented some improvements with the consequent reduction of losses, as shown in the table below:

Since 3 boilers had a potential optimization of parameters, the impact was approximately MR$ 645/year. Given the great challenge faced in 2017 in the Camaçari/BA area, savings in water resources are also noteworthy, i.e., a 39% reduction in blowdown flow, meeting all Braskem's corporate sustainability goals with a positive impact on water security of adjacent communities.
