The Union Pacific Railroad Pinnacle Award recognizes 65 companies with its distinguished Pinnacle Award for their commitment to the safe transportation of chemical products. The annual award honors Union Pacific customers for implementing release prevention, corrective plans and having zero non-accident releases (NARs) of regulated hazardous materials shipments.
The Nalco Champion Sugar Land plant was awarded this distinguished honor for exhibiting safe loading practices with zero non-accident releases for 2015. In 2015 the plant scheduled 140 rail cars that transported approximately 11.2 million Kgs (80K per rail car) of every finished product.
“With great pride, the Sugar Land plant accepts this award again. There are many steps involved to shipping railcars safely from the plant: from tracking the cars, scheduling and ordering them in, inspections, billing on the logistics side, correctly closing and pressure testing to insure we have it right on the physical side of loading and shipping,” said Gordon Dylla, Material Control Specialist. “Once the car reaches the plant we remove the bottom bell and pressure test the bottom valve. The bell is left off during the loading process to check the valve as well. The manway of the car is opened and a visual inspection is completed on the interior of the car to insure no problems with linings or other components. Once the car is loaded, the manway is correctly torqued to spec and pressure testing of the tank is completed to insure it is ready for shipment. Inspection of test dates and safety appliances are completed before releasing the car to the Railroad as well.”
